Small island states face unique economic challenges, climate vulnerability, dependence on a narrow export base, and exposure to external shocks, while high-capital costs, transaction fees and risk-appetite barriers from lenders hinder access to affordable financing. However, these nations also host distinctive opportunities for innovation, sustainable development, and global partnerships. On Thursday, May 29, the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings Global will host a fireside chat between Brookings Senior Fellow and Director of the Africa Growth Initiative Pierre Nguimkeu and His Excellency the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde José Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva on the country’s experience, goals, and priorities.
