From STEAM Sports Foundation:
ATLANTA, GA – STEAM Sports Foundation has announced that it is now taking applications for its “Women of Color” scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year. Each $10,000 scholarship will be a two-year $5,000 grant and come with an internship between the first and second year of the award.
The grants target female engineers and technicians striving for a career in the automotive/motorsports industry. Qualified applicants are those seeking either a two-year technical degree or those who have two years remaining at a four-year university. An emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs) or autonomous vehicles (AVs) is preferred.
STEAM Sports Foundation launched its inaugural “Women of Color” scholarship in automotive engineering last year, awarding a $5,000 grant to Kimberly Betty of Kettering University. Betty will do an internship this summer through NASCAR at the General Motors Technical Center in Concord, NC.
“We know that the automotive and transportation industries are among the most vital to the world’s economy,” says foundation Executive Director Bob Dickinson. “We encourage applicants not only to pursue opportunities within that industry but also to consider careers that emphasize the future of automotive – electric and autonomous vehicles.
“These grants hopefully provide a chance for young women of color who, growing up, have not seen women who looked like them in these roles and now realize that these opportunities are indeed realistic and attainable.”
Applications are due no later than June 15 and will be awarded by July 1. Applicants can submit the form found on the STEAM Sports Foundation website (www.steamsportsfoundation.org). Additional information about the scholarship and instructions are located on the website as well.
