MAX Minutes with the Georgia Transportation Alliance Focuses on Moving Georgia’s Workforce

July 28, 2025

The Georgia Transportation Alliance is the state’s only organization focused solely on identifying and promoting long-term transportation solutions specifically connected to economic development and job creation. The vision of the Georgia Transportation Alliance is to facilitate, protect, and compliment economic development and job opportunity in Georgia by identifying and securing a permanent, dedicated source of funding for the priorities in the Georgia Department of Transportation’s freight plan.

On Friday, July 25th, Joseph Santoro, Executive Director of the Georgia Transportation Alliance, joined MAX to review industry insights and shared that Georgia has the following:

  • 125,508 miles of roadway
  • 3,288 miles of Class I rail
  • 1,012 miles of Class III rail
  • 2 deepwater ports
  • 2 inland ports
  • 5 international rail yards
  • 9 commercial airports

In addition, Santoro made the following points:

  • Together, freight intensive industries make up approximately 40 percent of Georgia’s total employment.
  • The design, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure in Georgia supports approximately 110,000 full-time jobs across all sectors of the economy.
  • Approximately 1.9 million full-time jobs in Georgia’s key industries like tourism, retail sales, agriculture, and manufacturing are completely dependent on the state’s transportation network.
  • By 2050, Georgia’s population is projected to increase by nearly 2.5 million individuals and Georgia’s workforce is expected to grow by 3.1 million jobs.

Special thanks to MAX executive officer and board lead for MAX Minutes Daniela Perry, Executive Director, Georgia Chamber Foundation, for hosting the session.
