MAX Minutes with Steven Ferguson, Georgia AIM and Georgia Tech, on the AI in Manufacturing

October 27, 2024

On Friday, October 25th, Steven Ferguson, Managing Director of Georgia AIM, joined MAX to discuss the work of Georgia AIM, a coalition of partners across Georgia convened by Georgia Tech through a $65 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, now funded at more than $90 million. The goal of Georgia AIM is to “revolutionize the industrial economy of Georgia and the nation through the equitable development and deployment of talent and innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) for all manufacturing sectors.

Quoting Forbes, Ferguson shared how “artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept – it’s here, and it’s transforming industries at an unprecedented pace.” He then shared the following national trends when it comes to AI and workforce development:

  • 300% increase in AI-related job postings via LinkedIn since 2019
  • 23% of jobs changed due to AI and automation and 44% of workers will require retraining by 2027 according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report
  • AI will create more jobs than it replaces but very different jobs
  • Changing expectations among new entrants regarding jobs and careers in manufacturing
  • Retirement of baby boomers and declining interest in students in manufacturing are creating shortcomings
  • AI is here to augment (not replace) people.

Georgia AIM is working with manufacturers to prepare for tomorrow to access the workforce they need.

Special thanks to MAX board member Chris Kidd, Director of Economic Development, University System of Georgia, for arranging for the session and to MAX board lead for MAX Minutes Daniela Perry, Vice President, Georgia Chamber Foundation for hosting the session.
