MAX RESOURCE LIBRARY: Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Publishes Paper on Childcare Challenges for Workers

December 7, 2025

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta has recently released a discussion paper illustrating the childcare cost challenges for workers in critical occupations in high-growth communities in Florida and Georgia and how such challenges may limit workforce participation among such workers. The Atlanta Fed conducted a comprehensive analysis of 12 occupations, including those deemed essential and foundational to community development and employment objectives, across various geographic regions.

By evaluating the median cost of childcare and considering diverse family structures, the authors provide valuable insights into the financial burdens faced by working families with young children. Highlights of findings discussed in their paper include:

  • Significant difficulties with childcare affordability were identified in most scenarios examined. [
  • In rapidly growing metropolitan areas, inadequate childcare affordability may restrict sustained economic growth.
  • High childcare expenses can prevent families from participating in the workforce or cause essential workers to relocate to more affordable regions.
  • Local economic advancement may be limited by labor supply constraints rather than labor demand.

The analysis provides valuable insights into the financial burdens faced by working families with young children. The authors hope the findings can inform the development of strategies to improve childcare affordability for working households.
