MAX Minutes with David Giguere on the Iceberg Index, Smart Glasses, and Humanoid Robots

May 24, 2026

On Friday, May 22nd, David Giguere, Deputy Director, Research & Innovation, with the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) joined MAX to deliver a thought-provoking presentation on the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and robotics, challenging attendees to think beyond today’s AI chatbots and consider what the next wave of automation could mean for both white-collar and blue-collar work. Rather than offering predictions, Giguere framed the discussion around “signals of change” already emerging in the marketplace — from companies citing AI in workforce reductions to the rapid advancement of humanoid robots capable of performing physical tasks once thought to be automation-proof.

Giguere emphasized that while concerns about job displacement, privacy, and economic disruption are valid, the future is not fixed. The conversation repeatedly returned to the need for adaptability, lifelong learning, and thoughtful adoption of AI technologies as society works to balance innovation with human impact.

Key takeaways from Giguere’s presentation include:

  1. AI is creating new opportunities to rethink how work gets done. Rather than eliminating entire professions overnight, AI is more likely to handle repetitive portions of jobs, giving workers more time for creativity, problem-solving, relationship-building, and decision-making.
  2. AI is expected to support — not simply replace — many jobs. Rather than eliminating entire professions overnight, AI is more likely to handle repetitive portions of jobs, giving workers more time for creativity, problem-solving, relationship-building, and decision-making.
  3. Technology is expanding possibilities across both office and hands-on industries. Advances in robotics and embodied AI are opening the door for new efficiencies in logistics, manufacturing, construction, and other physical work environments, while also creating demand for new technical and operational skills.
  4. Humanoid robotics are advancing rapidly and could become valuable workplace tools.Companies developing next-generation robotics are making significant progress in systems that may eventually assist with repetitive, physically demanding, or hazardous tasks.
  5. Emerging technologies are prompting important conversations about privacy and responsible use. As smart devices and AI systems become more integrated into daily life, organizations and communities have an opportunity to shape thoughtful standards around transparency, security, and data protection.
  6. The rise of AI is encouraging broader discussions about the future economy and workforce. Questions around taxation, workforce transitions, and social systems highlight the importance of proactive planning and policy innovation as technology evolves.
  7. Adaptability, curiosity, and continuous learning remain the strongest advantages. The presentation emphasized that people who stay flexible, build diverse skills, and learn how to work effectively alongside AI will be well positioned to thrive in a changing economy.

Giguere closed by encouraging attendees to remain curious, continue building new skills, and think critically about when AI should — and should not — replace human effort.
