The use of long cane travel was described in England in 1862.  However, the method of travel became popular after the long cane was introduced in the United States after World War II. In 1965 studies from Hines Veteran Administration Hospital and other organizations for the blind proved that mobility instruction was effective to individuals whom had lost their sight.  The comprehensive system of instruction became known as Orientation and Mobility (O&M).
